Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
