Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
