The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
