The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
