British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
